Ethiopia
Ethiopia has one of the richest histories and cultures of any country in the world. It was here that palaeontologists found ’Lucy’, one of the earliest known human ancestors, over 3 million years old ( a plaster cast of which is in the National Museum of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa). It is believed that Ethiopia is the oldest area of human settlement and from where human beings migrated across the world.
Ethiopia is the second oldest Christian country in the world. Religion plays a major part in the lives of most Ethiopians and the church services, especially on main Holy days and Saint’s days, are colourful and unforgettable occasions. It has the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Africa, including the world famous rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. Coffee originated in Ethiopia and other main exports include gold, leather and cut flowers.
Ethiopia is a country of great diversity, examples of which include the landscapes, the tribal areas around Great Rift valley (there are over 85 different tribes in the country). It is also an ornithological paradise, with over 850 known species, 23 of which are considered endemic.
Added to this, Ethiopians are some of the most hospitable, friendly and easygoing people that you will find anywhere.
Addis Ababa
Located at an altitude of 2,400 meters above sea level, Addis Ababa is the third highest capital city in the world and one of the safest. Addis Ababa means ’new flower’ in Amharic.
To the north of the city, the Entoto hills offer panoramic views over the city.
Located in the centre of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa is considered the diplomatic centre of Africa, housing the headquarters of the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
