Attractions by Regions of Ethiopia
WEST
Western Ethiopia is one of the most fertile regions in the whole of the country, with coffee being its main crop. Just west of Addis Ababa at Wonchi, there is a volcanic crater lake surrounded by beautiful hills and at Addis Alem, one can see the splendid church of Debre Tsion Maryam church, famed for its unique design and decorations. Travelling further west one reaches the Gambella region and at Ginchi, the Cilimo Gaji area contains 11,000 hectares of ancient forest, some of the trees have been estimated to be over 400 years old. EAST
The eastern part of Ethiopia has two main tourist attractions, namely the medieval city of Harar and the Awash National Park. The city of Harar has been an important commercial center for centuries, linking Ethiopia with the rest of the Horn of Africa and outwards to the Arab and Indian worlds along ancient trade routes. We will walk you through the timeless labyrinth of alleyways of the old walled city and show you the inside of a typical Harari house, with its hanging baskets and coloured plates. SOUTH
Southern Ethiopia is a diverse region, both culturally and ecologically. The famous Omo Valley, where scientists have discovered fossil remains of mankind’s earliest ancestors is located here. The region is inhabited by incredibly colourful agro-pastoralist tribes whose lives are little different from their nomadic ancestors, each with their own languages, customs and dress. The region contains many of the beautiful Rift Valley lakes, where one can see hippopotamus and crocodiles and innumerable bird species including flamingos, pelicans and fish eagles. Read more ...
NORTH
Northern Ethiopia has many major cultural attractions such as Lalibela, Axum and Gondar. Lalibela contains the largest group of rock-hewn churches in the world and is the religious centre of the Christian population. Other attractions include the stunningly beautiful Simien mountains, Lake Tana, Tiss Isat waterfall, the monasteries and mountains of Gheralta and the extraordinary salt and sulphur lakes and volcanoes of the Danakil Depression.
